Frequently asked questions
What are the main components of an alarm system?
Depending on the system there can be various components including:
- Alarm Panel-the heart of your alarm system which controls all the devises.
- Access Control- refers to restricting access to buildings or areas inside buildings to only those authorised to be there (using electronic locks etc).
- CCTV-Closed Circuit Television. This was generally only used in banks, service stations etc but recent price reductions mean that affordable home systems are now available for as little as $200.00. They are very useful for monitoring children's play areas, pools etc.
- Codepad-Used to arm and disarm the system and program the alarm.
- Detectors-Devises that sense movement or body heat etc commonly used to identify somebody is in a room.
- Internal Siren-An extremely loud 'screamer' designed to make life 'unpleasant' for anyone inside when it is sounding.
- Pendants-Devises that can be multi function to arm, disarm or used in a duress situation.
- Reed Switches-Used to identify if a door, window or roller door has been opened.
- Siren Box-Mounted on the outside of the building to alert people in the area that there is an issue inside your home.
- Strobe Light-A bright flashing light, generally blue, to alert people of an alarm incident.
- Wireless devises-Alarm components (switches, detectors etc)typically are connected to the alarm panel by cable. We can now install 'wireless' devises that connect wirelessly. These are ideal in rented accommodation or in areas where running cable is unsightly or difficult.

How does the 'back to base' monitoring work?
The alarm sends information down the phone line to the 24hr/7day control room. This connection is generally called 'back to base monitoring'. The control room can tell which home sent the information and what alarm devise has been activated eg detector near back door.
-
After the control room receives the information, what do they do then?
There are various actions we can arrange for the control room to take but typically they call a list of people and numbers you have provided to us and advise them that an alarm has been activated.
-
What if I am a long way from my house?
If you are not able to travel to your home and an activation has occured we can arrange a patrol guard to investigate (charges will apply). The patrol guard will call to your premises and investigation the building looking for signs of forced entry, broken glass and report back to you.
-
Can I set my alarm at night?
We can tailor your alarm system to have a 'NIGHT' setting. Typically this would be to arm the exterior doors and garage areas for when you are sleeping. You can move freely within the house but the alarm will activate should somebody force a door or enter the garage.
-
How do I set my alarm?
There are two 'standard' methods of setting and alarm. The most common method is using a PIN like your keycard but we can install an alternative using a wireless pendent that you press prior to entering the home (to disarm) or press as you leave (to arm).
-
I have a member of my household who sometimes need to alert us of issues or problems. Can my alarm be connected to this?
We can design a system that has 'wireless duress pendants' connected to the system. The person can carry or wear the pendent and by pressing the 'button' a duress signal will be sent to the control room and the contact list will be called as per your instruction.
